Tan Siew Sin

Tun Tan Siew Sin (born May 21, 1916 in Malacca , † March 17, 1988 in Kuala Lumpur ) was Malaysia's first finance minister and chairman of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA). He is the only son of its founder Tan Cheng Lock and took over the leadership of the party from November 1961 to April 1974 after his death in 1960.

Life

In 1939 he finished his law studies in London and returned to Malaya . After that, he initially took care of the family's plantation business.

From 1941 to 1945 he worked for the British Information Service in India, where he and his father founded the Overseas Chinese Society .

After Cheah Toon Lock did not run for re-election as chairman of the MCA , Tan Siew Sin took over the leadership of the party on November 10, 1960. In 1969 he became Minister of Finance.

On April 8, 1974, he resigned as chairman of the MCA and finance minister for health reasons. After his resignation, he became a government advisor on economic issues and chaired Sime Darby Berhad .
