Tan Cheng Lock

Tun Dato Tan Cheng Lock (born April 5, 1883 in Malacca , † December 8, 1960 ibid) was the founder and from 1949 to 1958 the first president of the Malaysian Chinese Association , which campaigned for the interests of the ethnic Chinese in Malaysia, and a businessman.

Life

He was born into a wealthy family in Malacca . He invested primarily in rubber mining and banking and benefited from Malaya's economic growth early on .

Prior to Malaysia's independence, he was a member of the Straits Settlement Legislative Council .

His son Tan Siew Sin , the former Minister of Finance of Malaysia , was chairman of the Malaysian Chinese Association from 1961 to 1974.
