General election in Malaysia 2008
On March 8, 2008, the elections for the People's Assembly ( Dewan Rakyat ) took place, the parliament of Malaysia .
Parties
Several parties competed for the 222 seats in parliament. Due to the strict majority suffrage, it was expected even before the election that the government alliance Barisan Nasional would once again be the strongest force.
The current ruling party UMNO of the Barisan Nasional was led by Abdullah Ahmad Badawi , then Prime Minister of Malaysia . The Barisan Nasional is a multiethnic alliance led by the UMNO and has ruled since it was founded, consisting of 14 parties at the time of the elections.
The three largest opposition parties also formed an alliance, the Pakatan Rakyat . Represented in it are the social democratic Democratic Action Party (DAP), strictly Islamic party Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) and the national justice party Parti Keadilan Rakyat (Keadilan) from Anwar Ibrahim on.
Result
The elections on March 8, 2008 were won by the National Front ( Barisan Nasional ), which has ruled for more than 50 years , but suffered the most severe electoral defeat since 1969. It also lost the two-thirds majority, which is psychologically important for the BN and allows constitutional changes.
