The Prime Minister of Malaysia is the indirectly elected head of government of Malaysia . Since independence in 1957, the Prime Minister has come without exception from the United Malays National Organization , the largest political party in Malaysia and a main member of the Barisan Nasional coalition . It was not until 2018 that a Prime Minister from the Malaysian United Indigenous Party followed .
