Life

Abdullah is the offspring of a powerful family in Penang and graduated from Malaya University in 1964 with an art degree . After graduating, he joined the Diplomatic Corps and became a member of the Malaysian Parliament in 1974 . In 1982 he received the post of Minister in the Prime Minister's Office. He later served as Minister of Education and Minister of Defense , but was fired in 1987 for identifying with the breakaway wing of UMNO under Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah .

Abdullah remained a member of the UMNO and was successful in the October 1990 elections. He became vice president of the party under his rival Anwar Ibrahim . In March 1991, Abdullah became Foreign Minister of Malaysia before being appointed Deputy Prime Minister in 1999 following the fall of Anwar Ibrahim.

On October 31, 2003, Mahathir bin Mohamad handed over the post to his deputy, Abdullah, after 22 years at the helm of the government.

Abdullah was under pressure from April 2006 for implementing painful reforms in Malaysia; This economically liberal policy met with little approval from the predominantly Muslim population of the Southeast Asian country. For example, he reduced the subsidization of gasoline by 40%, which triggered a price jump of around 17 percent at the petrol pumps. Since June 2006, the head of government has also been sharply criticized by his predecessor Mahathir bin Mohamad . This accused him in particular of stifling domestic demand through his austerity policy . Party members themselves were dissatisfied with the poor election results in 2007, in which the UMNO lost its two-thirds majority for the first time since independence.

On April 3, 2009, Abdullah handed over his office to his deputy, Najib Razak . In 2009 he was appointed chairman of the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (Malay: Institut Kefahaman Islam Malaysia ; abbreviation IKIM).

In 2011 he received the King Faisal Prize for Services to Islam.
