Hussein Onn
Tun Hussein bin Dato 'Onn (born February 12, 1922 in Johor Bahru , † May 29, 1990 in San Francisco , California ) was a Malaysian politician and from 1976 to 1981 the third Prime Minister of Malaysia . He belonged to the politically dominant United Malays National Organization (UMNO) party.
Hussein was Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1968. After his predecessor, Abdul Razak , died of leukemia on January 14, 1976 , Hussein Onn took over the office of Prime Minister the following day.
In the spring of 1981 Hussein had to undergo an operation to create a coronary artery bypass , and in July of the same year he resigned from his post for health reasons. He was succeeded by Mahathir bin Mohamad . Hussein died on May 29, 1990 in San Francisco. Like his predecessor Abdul Razak, he was buried in Makam Pahlawan , a mausoleum for important figures in Malaysia, near the Malaysian state mosque, the Masjid Negara .
