Masjid Negara, Malaysia's National Mosque

The Masjid Negara ( malay. Mosque of the state ) is the national mosque of Malaysia . It holds 15,000 worshipers and is located in the middle of 13 hectares of gardens in Kuala Lumpur . The building was designed by a team of three from the Malaysian Public Works Department , British architect Howard Ashley and Malaysians Hisham Albakri and Baharuddin Kassim. The building was built in reinforced concrete in 1965 - as a symbol of the newly independent state of Malaysia.

The main features are the 73 meter high minaret and the 18-sided star-shaped reinforced concrete roof. The umbrella, as a synonym for the tropics, is the clearly visible design feature: the main roof is an allusion to an open umbrella, the minaret suggests a closed umbrella. The folded roof segments are a creative solution to achieve the required large span for the main hall. Reflective water surfaces and fountains surround the ensemble.
