1963-1965

The coat of arms of Malaysia consists of a multi-segmented shield in which the Malaysian states are represented. Above the shield is the golden fourteen-pointed star over a lying golden crescent from the flag of Malaysia . The shield holder is made up of two tigers, and under the shield there is a golden banner with the Malaysian state motto Bersekutu Bertambah Mutu (in Latin and Jawi script), in English "Unity is strength". The coat of arms was adopted after Malaysia was founded in 1963; Due to the frequent changes in the coats of arms of some states and Singapore's exit from the federal government in 1965, the national coat of arms was also modified several times. It is also part of the flag of the Malaysian king.

The coat of arms

The coat of arms consists of seven fields, which represent all 13 states of Malaysia as well as the state itself and are largely taken from the coats of arms of the states:

  1. Five golden curved daggers ( kris ) in the head of the shield , they represent the five former Unfederated Malay states of Johor , Kedah , Kelantan , Perlis and Terengganu .
  2. In the second field in white a naturally depicted betel palm , beneath it in yellow a black suspension bridge (for the Penang bridge that connects the island of Penang with the mainland), beneath it blue and white wavy lines, the field stands for Penang .
  3. The field at the heart is vertical black-red-white-yellow striped. The colors stand for the four Federated Malay States and were already in the flag and coat of arms of the Federation: red, black and yellow for Negeri Sembilan , black and white for Pahang , black, white and yellow for Perak and red and yellow for Selangor .
  4. In the fourth field in white a naturally depicted melaka or amla tree (Phyllanthus emblica) on a green background for Malacca .
  5. The fifth field to the right of the tip stands for the state of Sabah , it shows the state coat of arms in white:
  6. In the middle field in the top a red hibiscus flower in white; the hibiscus is the national flower of Malaysia. Until his exit from the Federation of Malaysia, the field stood for Singapore .
  7. In the last field to the left of the tip in white a rhinoceros bird ( Buceros rhinoceros ), the heraldic animal of Sarawak .

The other elements

The yellow of the star, crescent moon and banner is the color of the monarchy in Malaysia. The fourteen points of the star symbolize the 13 states and the unity of Malaysia or the federal territories. (Originally the fourteenth point was intended for Singapore , which later left the Federation of Malaysia.) The crescent moon stands for Islam , the Malaysian state religion . The two tigers are ancient symbols of rule and were already shield holders for the coat of arms of the Malaya Federation .
