Introduced 1976

The coat of arms of Qatar was introduced in 1976.

description

The coat of arms shows two crossed white scimitar in a sand-colored circle, behind which a dhow in natural colors floats next to an island with two palm trees on light blue and white wavy lines .

The circle is surrounded by a round band that is horizontally divided into white and maroon by a jagged dividing line.

In the white section is in brown Kufi script, the state name (دولة قطر, DMG Daulat Qaṭar ), in the brown section the English translation (State of Qatar) in white letters, in an old German Fraktur font.

The coat of arms is also shown in versions without the English inscription, the middle circle is sometimes yellow, the scimitar is also brown.

The colors and the jagged separation of the outer ring are taken from the flag of Qatar .

symbolism

The curved sword is a typical weapon of the Arabs and is supposed to remind of the glorious past. But it also has religious meaning and shows the boundary between right and wrong.

The palm trees are supposed to symbolize the desire to make the desert fertile.

The sailing ship shows the importance of shipping for the country.

history

After the neighboring sheikdom of Bahrain had given itself a national coat of arms, the brown color of the country's name, used as a national emblem, was no longer sufficient. In 1966, the first pre-form of today's national coat of arms was introduced.

The current coat of arms was introduced in 1976, replacing the simpler monochromatic emblem, which consisted only of two scimitar, a pearl shell and two palm branches with the inscription Qatar .

The elements of the coat of arms can be found in the state symbols of several Arab countries: the traditional Arab scimitar or curved sword in the coats of arms of Saudi Arabia and Oman , the Dau also in the coats of arms of Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates .

The palm tree is also a national symbol of Saudi Arabia .
