The coat of arms of the Kurdistan Region is the official coat of arms of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region in Iraq .

description

The coat of arms consists of an eagle holding a sun in the colors of the Kurdish flag : yellow, red, green. The eagle is said to fall back on the realm of the Medes . In Iraqi arms is Eagle of Saladin used there he stands for the pan-Arabism . Furthermore, the eagle is on a banner that reads "Regional Government of Kurdistan" in English , Arabic and Kurdish . The year 1992 is also on the banner. In 1992 the “Federal State of Kurdistan” was proclaimed. The frequent occurrence of the number four in the coat of arms is striking: four feathers on each wing, four tail feathers, four sun rays of the same color. This symbolizes the four states in which Kurds live ( Turkey , Iraq , Iran , Syria ), and the claimed four governorates from which the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan is formed ( Arbil , Dahuk , Kirkuk and as-Sulaimaniya ). Ultimately, the four symbolizes a claim, because Kirkuk is heavily contested. Officially, it does not (yet) belong to the autonomous region, even if it has been occupied by Kurdish troops since 2003. A planned referendum on the membership of Kirkuk has been postponed again and again.
