Introduced 1948

The coat of arms of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea was adopted along with the state flag in September 1948.

description

The coat of arms shows a reservoir with a hydroelectric power station and a high-voltage pylon in front of a snow-covered mountain range.

Above it stands a red, five-pointed star surrounded by rays.

It is framed in a circle by two bundles of rice ears , around which a red ribbon is woven, on which the state name (조선 민주주의 인민 공화국 - Democratic People's Republic of Korea) is written in white Hangeul script.

symbolism

According to Article 163 of the North Korean Constitution , the mountain is Paektu , the sacred mountain of the revolution . In fact, this tallest mountain in Korea has long had a mythological meaning comparable to the Greek Olympus . The stylization as a revolutionary mountain, however, comes from the founder of the state Kim Il-sung , who claimed to have organized the resistance against the Japanese from here and that his son Kim Jong-il was born here.

According to the government, the red star symbolizes the glorious revolutionary traditions that Kim Il-sung left to the Korean people and the great future of the Korean people, who are united around the leader continuously on the path of the peaceful unification of the country and the victory of the Juche idea advances . The other symbols, the hydropower station for industry, the wreath of ears for agriculture and the red ribbon for the solidarity of the Korean people are described in a similarly optimistic manner.

history

The coat of arms was adopted along with the state flag in September 1948. It follows the scheme of the communist national coat of arms and is based on the model of the Soviet national coat of arms .
