The golden Garuda eagle wears the coat of arms of Indonesia with a golden chain around its neck. Its 17 flight and 8 tail feathers represent August 17, 1945 . That Friday was the day of the proclamation of independence. The coat of arms represents the pancasila , the 5 principles of the state. The principles are:

  1. The gold star on the black shield in the middle of the coat of arms stands for belief in one god.
  2. In the red field in front, the buffalo head symbolizes democracy.
  3. In the silver field at the top at the back is a banyam tree, which stands for national unity.
  4. In the lower right silver field rice and cotton are shown, which stand for social justice and the equality of men and women.
  5. The gold chain in the lower left red field consists of round and square links. It is the symbol of humanity in society.

These 5 principles are in the silver ribbon under the motto "BHINNEKA TUNGGAL IKA", which means something like "Unity in diversity".
