Coat of arms of Turkmenistan

The state emblem serves as the national coat of arms of Turkmenistan . After independence from the Soviet Union in 1992, it was initially adopted in a circular shape with slightly different colors; the current design was introduced in 2003. The current form is reminiscent of the symbol Rub al-hizb used in the Koran . Some of its elements can also be found in the Turkmen flag .

The emblem shows the Akhal-Teke stallion Yanardag in natural colors on a circular, dark blue disc that lies on a red disc, on which five traditional Turkmen carpet ornaments in the colors green, red, gold and white are arranged in a circle. The red disk lies on a green, gold-rimmed eight-pointed star. A golden ear of wheat twines around the red disc on either side , including seven white cotton plants , above five white five-pointed stars and a (growing) white crescent moon.

symbolism

Akhal-Teke breeding is thousands of years old in Turkmenistan, and the horse breed is now a symbol of the pride of the Turkmen. The five carpet patterns represent the five traditional Turkmen tribes. The ears of wheat allude to the Turkmen custom of greeting guests with bread and salt . Cotton is the country's most important agricultural export. The five stars stand for the five welaýatlar (provinces) Ahal , Balkan , Daşoguz , Lebap and Mary , the crescent moon is on the one hand a symbol for Islam, but is also interpreted as a symbol of the people's hope for a good future. Green and red are traditional colors of Islam. According to the official interpretation, the symbolic content is interpreted today with Turkmen customs and traditions, but the conservative or religious symbolism (color scheme, crescent moon, carpet pattern), which was probably still openly intended at the time of its introduction, cannot be overlooked.
