Daşoguz welaýaty (formerly Russian Ташаузская область Tashausskaja oblast ) is one of the five provinces of Turkmenistan .
The province is located in the north of the country and borders Uzbekistan in the north . At the border lies the Sarykamysch Depression , where the Sarykamyschsee formed. Large parts of the province are occupied by the Karakum Desert.
The area is 73,430 km², the population (2005) around 1,370,000, resulting in a population density of around 19 inhabitants / km².
The capital of the province is Daşoguz (formerly Taschaus), other larger cities are Köneürgenç and Ýylanly .
In the north, the south-western part of the historic area is Choresmien .
