Balkan welaýaty (formerly Russian Красноводская область Krasnovodskaja Oblast ) is one of the five provinces of Turkmenistan .
The province is located in the west of the country on the coast of the Caspian Sea and its salty lagoon Kara-Bogas-Gol . It borders Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in the north and Iran in the south . It is named after the Great Balkans , a mountain range up to 1,880 m high (not to be confused with the mountains of the same name in southeastern Europe).
The area is 139,270 km², the population (2005) around 553,500, which results in a population density of around 4 inhabitants / km².
The capital of the province is Balkanabat (formerly Nebit-Dag), other larger cities are Türkmenbaşy (formerly Krasnovodsk), Serdar (formerly Kyzyl -Arwat), Hazar and Gumdag .
