Mary welaýaty (formerly Russian Марыйская область Maryjskaja oblast ) is one of the five provinces of Turkmenistan .
The province is located in the south-east of the country and borders Afghanistan in the south-east and south . The south of the province by the river flows Murghab , in the Desert Karakum seeps, and the Karakum Canal crosses the province.
The area is 87,150 km², the population (2005) around 1,480,000, resulting in a population density of around 17 inhabitants / km².
The capital of the province is Mary , which is not far from the famous ruined city of Merw ; other larger cities are Baýramaly and Ýolöten . In addition to the ruins of Merw, there are also traces of Buddhist settlement in the region , including in Gonur Depe and Ýekedeşik, of tourist and historical importance .
