Ahal welaýaty (formerly Russian Ашхабадская область Ashchabadskaja Oblast ) is one of the five provinces of Turkmenistan .

The province is located south-central in the country and borders Iran and Afghanistan . The Turkmen capital Ashgabat is enclosed by it, but administratively forms a separate capital district ( Ashgabat şaheri ).

In the south, the province is crossed by the Karakum Canal , which is where the main focus of the population is. In the north it is part of the Karakum desert.

The area is 97,160 km², the population (2005) around 940,000, resulting in a population density of around 9.7 inhabitants / km².

The provincial capital, Änew , Abadan , Bähden , Büzmeýin and Tejen are among the largest cities in the province .
