Abadan is a city in Ahal Province in southwest Turkmenistan .

geography

It is located 20 km northwest of the capital Ashgabat and 30 km north of the border with Iran . Abadan was founded in 1963 and has a population of around 50,000.

history

Her original (Russian) name was Büzmeýin (Russian: Бюзмейн) until she was renamed by the then President of Turkmenistan, Saparmurat Niyazov , in October 2002.

Accident caused by an explosion

On July 7, 2011 , according to eyewitness reports, a large part of the city was destroyed by explosions in an army ammunition dump. Accordingly, there should have been over 1,000 deaths. A website gave the number as 1382. At 40 degrees Celsius , several short-range missiles are said to have started from an ammunition dump and these are said to have hit houses, including schools and hospitals . Almost a third of those killed are children . This information has not yet been officially confirmed, rather there is talk of the explosion of fireworks in a department store, in which 13 people were killed.
