Balkanabat ( Russian Балканабад Balkanabad , formerly Nebit-Dag or Nebitdag ) is the capital of the Balkans Province in Western Turkmenistan with 108,000 inhabitants (as of 2011).
It is located about 600 km northwest of the capital, Ashgabat . It was founded in 1933 as a station on the Trans-Caspian Railway and was called Nefte-Dag ( Russian Neft : petroleum ) until 1946 . From 1946 to 1999 it was called Nebit-Dag and was then given its current name. The city is an industrial center for oil and natural gas processing.
The Great Balkan Mountains (Turkmen Uly Balkan, formerly Great Baichan ) lie north of the city.
