The coat of arms of the Republic of Cyprus shows in a yellow shield a white dove with a green olive branch in its beak. The year 1960 appears in black under the dove . A two-part green wreath winds around the shield .

The warm yellow tone symbolizes the once rich copper deposits on the island, which gave the metal its name (lat. "Cuprum" ), the olive branches stand for the two ethnic groups on Cyprus, the dove as a symbol of peace . The design goes back to the Turkish Cypriot İsmet Güney , who is also the designer of the flag of the Republic of Cyprus.

history

Immediately after the island gained independence in 1960, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios , asked Vice-President Fazıl Küçük to determine the island's state symbols. Küçük commissioned his friend, Ismet Güney, to work out a draft, which was actually adopted.

Since the occupation of the north by Turkish troops in 1974 and the proclamation of the internationally unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in 1983, condemned by the UN Security Council , the coat of arms has been used there in a modified form as the emblem of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus .
