Charles Robert "Chuck" Gardiner (born December 31, 1904 in Edinburgh , Scotland , Great Britain , † June 13, 1934 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) was a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played for the Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League from 1927 to 1934 .
Career
Born in Scotland , Gardiner grew up in Winnipeg , Manitoba . He was arguably the best goalkeeper in the NHL in the late 20s and early 30s . The fearless and charismatic "Chuck" crowned his outstanding performance in his seventh season in 1934 as captain of the Chicago Blackhawks by winning the Stanley Cup . Triumphantly he left the ice and never returned.
He died of a brain tumor in his home town of Winnipeg in the summer of just 29 years old .
In 1945 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
