Martin T. Lapointe (born September 12, 1973 in Montréal , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player , scout and current official who played 1099 games for the Detroit Red Wings , Boston Bruins during his active career between 1989 and 2008 , Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League on the right winger position . In the service of the Detroit Red Wings, Lapointe won the Stanley Cup twice in 1997 and 1998 . Since the summer of 2017 he has been the Director of Player Personnel for the Canadiens de Montréal from his hometown.
Career
Martin Lapointe began his career in 1989 in the Canadian junior league Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec with the Titan de Laval . In his first year he proved his talent and scored 96 points in 65 games and was able to increase the mark to 98 points the following year. There were also several awards for his achievements. In the 1991 NHL Entry Draft , he was then selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round in tenth place.
In the following two years he played mainly in the LHJMQ for Laval, but also came to his first appearances for Detroit in the National Hockey League and their farm team , the Adirondack Red Wings in the American Hockey League . In 1993 he finally switched to the professionals and played alternately in the NHL and the AHL until 1995, where he was one of the top scorers of the Adirondack Red Wings.
In the 1995/96 season he made his final breakthrough in the NHL and established himself under coach Scotty Bowman as a hard-playing striker who had his strengths especially in battles in the corners behind the goals. In the 1997 Stanley Cup playoffs , he won the Stanley Cup with the Red Wings . In the playoffs of the 1997/98 season , Lapointe also put emphasis on the offensive and scored nine goals. Including the winning goal in the Stanley Cup final, which led to the defense of the title. He played for more years in Detroit until he left the team after the 2000/01 season. It was personally the most successful NHL season of his career with 27 goals and 57 points.
He signed a contract with the Boston Bruins in the summer of 2001 . There he continued his physically tough game and collected many penalty minutes. However, he was repeatedly slowed down by injuries. The 2004/05 NHL season fell out because of the lockout and Lapointe was a free agent in the summer of 2005 and received a new contract with the Chicago Blackhawks . In his first year in Chicago, he temporarily led the team on the ice as team captain, as the actual captain Adrian Aucoin was injured for a long time. He had to leave Chicago in February 2008 when he was transferred to the Ottawa Senators , where he played the rest of the season. He then ended his active career.
After retiring, Lapointe was hired as a scout by his ex-club Chicago Blackhawks in December 2009 . He worked there for three years before moving to the Canadiens de Montréal in June 2012 . At Canadiens he was Director of Player Development until summer 2017 . Since then he has acted as Director of Player Personnel .
Style of play
Martin Lapointe was known as a two-way striker who works a lot on the defensive as well as offensive actions. Due to his tough game, he collected a lot of penalty minutes. During his NHL career, he was never able to build on the scorer qualities of his junior career. Lapointe was considered a player with great leadership qualities.
