Career
Growing up during World War II , Gadsby was consistently a persistent and tough defender . During his junior years, he went mainly for the Edmonton Canadians , with whom he also took part in the Memorial Cup . A fan of the Chicago Black Hawks from a young age, Gadsby was recruited during this time by Chicago scout Bill Tobin , who was convinced of Gadsby's abilities. Tobin made him an offer of contract for a total of $ 7,500 plus another $ 3,000 bonus.
First, the Canadian was active at the beginning of the 1946/47 season for the minor league team Kansas City Pla-Mors in the United States Hockey League before making his debut for the Black Hawks in the National Hockey League during the season. In the same season, he defeated Harry Lumley of the Detroit Red Wings with a second left when the defender scored the winning goal for the Hawks. While he played his way into the All-Star teams again and again , he never managed to win the Stanley Cup with any of his teams . 1956 followed the first nomination for the NHL First All-Star Team , but at this time he was already playing for the New York Rangers . In 1958 and 1959 he also found himself in the First All-Star Team, while he was another four times in the Second All-Star Team. In the course of his career, the defender in the jersey of the Detroit Red Wings, for which he was active from 1961, reached the final series of the Stanley Cup three times, with the team losing to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1963 and 1964 and the Canadiens de Montréal in 1966 .
After the 1965/66 season, Gadsby ended his active career shortly before his 39th birthday. At the end of the 1960s he worked as a coach for the Detroit Red Wings. In 1970 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame . He died in May 2016 at the age of 88 in his adopted home of Farmington Hills , Michigan, USA .
