Sidney Gerald "Sid" Abel (born February 22, 1918 in Melville , Saskatchewan ; † February 8, 2000 in Farmington Hills , Michigan ) was a Canadian ice hockey player ( center / left winger ), coach and general manager who worked from 1939 to 1954 for played the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League .
Career
As a junior he played in 1936 with the Saskatoon Wesleys for the Memorial Cup and later with the Flin Flon Bombers for the Allan Cup , but could not win any of these trophies.
In the 1938/39 season he made his debut with the Detroit Red Wings , but it took a few years before he could prevail in the NHL. He won his first Stanley Cup in the 1942/43 season . At that time he played with Don Grosso and Eddie Wares in the Liniment Line . He spent the years between 1943 and 1945 in the army and was therefore absent from his team. At the end of the 1945/46 season he played seven more games and was able to fully intervene in the following season. Now Abel, now 29 years old, was given the young Gordie Howe , then 19, and Ted Lindsay , then 22, by his side. Together as the " Production Line " they were the strongest assault line in the NHL at the time and made the first three places on the scorer list in the 1949/50 season . As captain of the Red Wings, he won the Stanley Cup again in 1950 and 1952. At the age of 34 he received an offer from Chicago to act as a player-coach and the Red Wings released him. After two years with the Black Hawks, he ended his active career.
In 1957 he returned to Detroit as a coach and in 1962 also took over the job of general manager. In 1971 he took over the St. Louis Blues for ten games and a few years later coached the Kansas City Scouts for three games .
Sid Abel was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1969 .
His grandson Brent Johnson , born in 1977, was a goalkeeper in the NHL.
