Gary Gunnar Bergman (born October 7, 1938 in Kenora , Ontario , † December 8, 2000 in Detroit , Michigan , USA ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played 859 games for the Detroit Red Wings between 1957 and 1976 , Minnesota North Stars and Kansas City Scouts in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . The one-time NHL All-Star served at times as the team captain of the Detroit Red Wings, with which he spent most of his career.

Career

Bergman, who in Kenora in the province of Ontario was born, spent his junior time from 1957 to 1959 in Winnipeg . There he played for two years for the Winnipeg Braves in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League . In the course of his first year there, he gained his first professional experience when he played two games for the Winnipeg Warriors in the Western Hockey League . In his sophomore year, he led the Braves to win the Turnbull Cup , the MJHL championship trophy, and the Memorial Cup . The defender collected just as many scorer points in 24 playoff matches .

For the season 1959/60 Bergman finally moved permanently to the professional area and joined Winnipeg professional team, the Warriors from the WHL. His balanced game, which made it usable in both outnumbered and outnumbered situations, led to his playing in the American Hockey League from the 1960/61 season . The defender was selected in the summer of 1960 in the intra-league draft by the Chicago Black Hawks from the National Hockey League , who used him in their farm team , the Buffalo Bisons , in the American Hockey League. After a year they sold the defender to the Canadiens de Montréal , where he also played in the AHL with the Cleveland Barons . But Bergman did not find a sporting home there either, as he was sold from Montréal to the Boston Bruins in the summer of 1962 . In their service he played for the As de Québec from the AHL until December 1962 , before he was transferred back to Montréal and Cleveland, so that Boston got the NHL rights back to Terry Gray . In the course of another transfer business, Bergman played from the summer of 1963 for the Springfield Indians in the American Hockey League, to which he had been loaned from Montréal.

For the game year 1964/65 , the versatile defensive player was finally selected in a recent intra-league draft by the Detroit Red Wings . This gave the now 26-year-old the opportunity to prove himself in the NHL. Bergman took the chance and was a solid regular in the Detroit squad for the next nine seasons. In the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1966 he reached the final series with the team, but was subject to his ex-employer, the Canadiens de Montréal. At the beginning of the 1973/74 season - his tenth with the Red Wings - the all-star game participant of the preseason and winner of the Charlie Conacher Humanitarian Award , which he shared with Jimmy Peters junior , temporarily served as team captain . Nevertheless, he left the club after eleven appearances this season, since he was given in November 1973 in exchange for Ted Harris to the Minnesota North Stars .

Bergman spent the remainder of the game year in Minnesota, making 57 appearances for the North Stars. In the summer of 1974 he was brought back by the Red Wings in exchange for a third-round suffrage in the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft . He collected another respectable 30 points for Detroit in the 1974/75 season . However, his second employment with the Detroit Red Wings ended after just a year. In August 1975 he was again part of a transfer deal when he was given to the Kansas City Scouts together with Bill McKenzie . In return, Peter McDuffe and Glen Burdon moved to Detroit. With the Scouts, Bergman spent his twelfth and final year in the NHL before he announced his retirement from active sports in the summer of 1976 at the age of 38.

After his retirement, Bergman worked for many years in the alumni department of the Detroit Red Wings. He died in December 2000 at the age of 62 in his adopted home Detroit of complications from cancer diagnosed in the spring of the same year . In 2005, he was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame of Canadian Sports as a player on the Canadian team for the 1972 Summit Series .

International

For his homeland, Bergman took part in the 1972 Summit Series against the USSR national team. He was one of only six players in the Canadian squad , who played all eight games in the series. He himself contributed a template to three goals.
