At the Detroit Olympics in the CPHL he was in the 1928/29 season with 26 goals and 34 points top scorer and scorer in the league. When the NHL established a franchise in Detroit a year later, he was brought into the squad of the Detroit Cougars at the time . These changed their name to Falcons the following year, before it was renamed Detroit Red Wings in 1932.

He began his career in the NHL as a center and was second best scorer in the 1930/31 season . However, he became a permanent fixture in the defense of the team with whom he was able to win the Stanley Cup twice in the mid-1930s . He was elected three times to the NHL's All-Star Team .

In the 1942/43 season he was the last player-coach who managed to win the Stanley Cup. After this season he ended his career.
