Theodore Samuel "Teeder" Kennedy (born December 12, 1925 in Humberstone , Ontario , † August 14, 2009 in Port Colborne , Ontario) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League from 1943 to 1957 .

Career

Ted Kennedy (top right) with Vic Lynn , Gus Mortson and Bud Poile in the changing room at the Toronto Maple Leafs (1946–47).

At the age of 16, Kennedy took part in the training camp of the Montréal Canadiens , but plagued by homesickness, he left it again soon. Frank Selke acquired the transfer rights to him from Montreal and so he played for the Toronto Maple Leafs from the 1942/43 season .

He wasn't a good skater, but his leadership skills quickly made him an important member of the team. He was very dangerous and in the playoffs 1947/48 he was the most successful scorer. Together with Howie Meeker and Vic Lynn he formed the "Kid Line II". He became team captain of the Leafs, which won the Stanley Cup three times in a row . Since it was felt in Toronto that he should receive more attention for his performance, the JP Bickell Trophy was introduced in 1955 for the best player in the Maple Leafs. This year it wouldn't have been necessary because he could win the Hart Memorial Trophy . Then he ended his career. When the squad was weakened by numerous injuries in the following season, he returned for 30 games. One of Kennedy's particular strengths was the bully.

In 1966 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
