Herbert William "Buddy" O'Connor (born June 21, 1916 in Montreal , Québec , † August 24, 1977 ) was a Canadian ice hockey player (center), who from 1941 to 1951 for the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers in the National Hockey League played.

Career

Due to his small size, O'Connor had great problems finding a team during his time as a junior player. So the Montreal Royals rejected his commitment and he then switched to the competition. He impressed the management of the Royals so much that a year later he was offered a contract. There he later played in the senior team until he made the leap to the Montreal Canadiens in the NHL at the age of 25 for the 1941/42 season .

Together with Pete Morin and Gerry Heffernan , he had already formed the Razzle Dazzle Line at the Royals . Now the three played together in the NHL. He developed into a valuable player in the Canadiens and won the Stanley Cup with his team in 1944 and 1946 .

For the 1947/48 season he was given to the New York Rangers together with Frank Eddolls, among others for Hal Laycoe . Here he played the best season of his career. With 24 goals and 60 points, he was second on the scorer list. As the first player in NHL history, he was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy and the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in one season. In the following season he was injured in a car accident and missed a few games. He could not build on the performance of his first season in New York in the following years. After the 1950/51 season he left the NHL and moved as a player-coach to the Cincinnati Mohawks in the American Hockey League .

In 1988 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
