Bernard Joseph André "Boom Boom" Geoffrion (born February 16, 1931 in Montreal , Québec , † March 11, 2006 in Atlanta , Georgia ) was a Canadian ice hockey player and coach who worked for the Canadiens de Montréal and New York from 1950 to 1968 Rangers played in the National Hockey League .
Career
Geoffrion was born and raised in Montreal. He began his ice hockey career at Mount St. Louis College and from 1947 played for Lavale Nationale on the right wing. From 1951 he played for Canadiens de Montréal and was nicknamed "Boom Boom" by Charlie Boire, a sports reporter for the Montreal Star . The nickname referred to the loud noise that the characteristic hard shots made when the puck crashed into the gang. In 1952 he was awarded the prize for the best newcomer ( rookie ), the Calder Memorial Trophy . In 1953 he won his first Stanley Cup with Montreal and there were five consecutive titles from 1956 to 1960. In 1964 he left his club and coached the Québec Aces team for two years . He had already ended his career when the New York Rangers were able to persuade him to make a comeback for two years in the 1966/67 season .
When the Atlanta Flames got into the NHL, Bernie Geoffrion was their first coach. During the 1979/80 season he took over the Canadiens until the end of the season. In 1972 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
In 2005, Geoffrion contracted stomach cancer, which he succumbed to on March 11, 2006. On the same day, the Montreal Canadiens blocked his jersey number 5, which is no longer given to any other player.
