After a convincing first season he was with the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best Neuprofi ( Rookie excellent and) bit later to the captain of the franchise from Denver appointed.
At the international level, he won the gold medal with the Swedish national team at the 2013 and 2017 World Championships .
Career
Beginnings in Sweden, Ontario Hockey League
Gabriel Landeskog played in his junior days in the ice hockey department of Djurgårdens IF , Djurgården Hockey . From the 2008/09 season he was there regularly in the junior league J20 SuperElit for use. In the same season he also played three games for Djurgården's professional team in Sweden's top division, Elitserien , in which he scored an assist. His first appearance was at the age of 16 years and 90 days, making him Djurgården's youngest player ever.
In the 2009 CHL Import Draft , Landeskog was selected by the Plymouth Whalers from the Ontario Hockey League in third overall position. However, the player only wanted to play for the Kitchener Rangers as he was most convinced of their youth program. The Rangers, in turn, drafted Tomáš Tatar . After Landeskog declared that they would not play for the Whalers, but would continue to go on the ice for Djurgården, both OHL teams worked out a transfer in which the draft rights of the two players were swapped. In addition, the Whalers received two second-round draft picks.
Landeskog then decided to move to North America and completed 61 games in his first season with the Kitchener Rangers, in which he scored 24 goals and a total of 46 points. In the following play-offs Kitchener defeated the Saginaw Spirit and the London Knights , before the Rangers were defeated by the Windsor Spitfires in the Conference final . Landeskog scored 23 points in 20 play-off games, more than any other OHL rookie . In October 2010, Landeskog was named the Rangers' first European team captain. In the 2010/11 season, the striker scored 66 points in 53 games, in the play-offs, the team was eliminated in the first round against the Plymouth Whalers.
Jump into the NHL
The Swede was selected in the first round in second place overall by the Colorado Avalanche at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft , an annual event at which teams of the National Hockey League can secure the rights to promising young players . On July 28, 2011, Landeskog signed a three-year entry - level contract with Colorado Avalanche. Landeskog was immediately able to recommend himself for a regular place in the Avalanche's NHL squad during the preparation for the season. On October 8, 2011, the winger completed his first NHL game, two game days later he scored his first NHL goal in a game of the Avalanche against the Columbus Blue Jackets . This goal made him the youngest Swede in NHL history to score a goal.
The offensive player was named NHL Rookie of the Month in February 2012 after scoring seven goals and a total of 13 points scorer in twelve Colorado Avalanche games that month. Gabriel Landeskog finished his rookie season as the third best point collector in the Avalanche; throughout the league, his 52 scorer points were the most among all rookies. The Swede also impressed with his defensive game in his debut season in the National Hockey League. He had the second best plus / minus value (+20) among all rookies in the league; within the team, he was in first place among all players in this category. Away from the ice, his leadership qualities as well as his physical and psychological maturity stood out. For these achievements he was honored after the 2011/12 season with the Calder Memorial Trophy , which is awarded annually to the best rookie of the National Hockey League.
On September 4, 2012, Gabriel Landeskog was named team captain of the Colorado Avalanche. At the time of his appointment, the Swede was the youngest ever captain of an NHL franchise, at 19 years and 286 days - a record that Connor McDavid broke by 20 days in October 2016. A month later, because of the lockout before the start of the 2012/13 NHL season , Landeskog signed a contract with Djurgårdens IF, initially limited to two months, which was not extended. After the NHL resumed play in January 2013, he suffered a traumatic brain injury on the fourth day of the game against the San Jose Sharks after a check by Brad Stuart and had to suspend the following 11 games from play. In total, Landeskog completed 36 games in his second NHL season, with 17 points scorer.
Before the start of the 2013/14 season , Landeskog signed a new seven-year contract, which is valid until 2021 and is remunerated at 39 million US dollars. In the 2018/19 season, he recorded his previous career best in the NHL with 75 points scorer and at the same time reached the mark of over one point per game for the first time.
International
Gabriel Landeskog represented the Swedish national team for the first time at an international tournament at the U18 Junior World Cup in 2009 , where the team lost to the Russian selection in the quarter-finals . Landeskog was used in all six games of the Swedes and scored four goals. The player also took part in the 2011 U20 World Youth Championship , but only played one game in which he scored one goal and one assist due to an ankle injury. Landeskog had his first appearance in Sweden's men's selection at the 2012 World Cup , where he immediately ran up as assistant captain of Tre Kronor and lost to the Czech selection with his team in the quarter-finals .
At the 2013 World Cup in Stockholm and Helsinki he was again part of the national team and won the gold medal with them after beating the Swiss national team in the final .
Furthermore, he represented his home country at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , where he achieved third place with the team. This was followed by winning another gold medal at the 2017 World Cup .
