The 59th National Hockey League All-Star Game took place on January 29, 2012 at Scotiabank Place , the home ground of the Ottawa Senators , in the Canadian capital Ottawa in the province of Ontario .

Choice of participants

The first six participating players for the All-Star Game were determined by means of a fan vote. Erik Karlsson , defender of the host Ottawa Senators, received the most votes with 939,591 votes and was elected to the event along with his teammates, the two wingers Milan Michálek and Daniel Alfredsson, and center forward Jason Spezza . Goalkeeper Tim Thomas from the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs defender Dion Phaneuf completed the six players who participated by fan vote.

The other 36 players for the All-Star Game were determined by the National Hockey League and announced on January 12, 2012 together with twelve rookies who will take part in the Skills Competition on January 28, 2012 . The two teams in the All-Star Game each have three goalkeepers, six defenders and twelve forwards. The captains were determined in a player election, which took place on January 18, 2012. Daniel Alfredsson and Zdeno Chára were chosen as captains . In the so-called “Player Fantasy Draft” on January 26, 2012, the two captains and assistant captains put together the teams from the remaining eligible players. In the NHL All-Star Game, the two teams therefore competed under the name Team Alfredsson vs. Team Chára on.
