Kimmo Samuel Timonen (born March 18, 1975 in Kuopio ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who has completed over 1,100 games in the National Hockey League and was mainly on the ice for the Nashville Predators and the Philadelphia Flyers . In February 2015, he moved to the Chicago Blackhawks , won the Stanley Cup with them and then ended his active career as previously announced. He has been a member of the IIHF Hall of Fame since 2020 .
Career
At the beginning of his career, Timonen played in his home country Finland between 1991 and 1998 for the teams KalPa Kuopio , TPS Turku and HIFK Helsinki . During this time he was selected in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft in the tenth round in 250th place by the Los Angeles Kings .
In 1998 he ventured into the National Hockey League , where he first played for the farm team of the Nashville Predators , the Milwaukee Admirals , in the International Hockey League . After very good performance with the Admirals, he finally prevailed and played for the Nashville Predators. Since then, Timonen has been a constant in the team. When it was decided to sell the team at the end of the 2006/07 season , there was uncertainty about the budget available for the following season. Knowing that this would make the contract extension with Timonen very difficult, the Predators transferred him to the Philadelphia Flyers , which gave him a $ 37.8 million six-year contract. Timonen is known for his very good passes and aggressive man marking.
In 2006 he won the silver medal with the Finnish national team at the Olympic Winter Games in Turin . In the 2006/07 season he was team captain of the Nashville Predators. At the 2014 Olympic Games, he won the bronze medal with the Finnish national team.
In August 2014, Timonen was diagnosed with thrombi in both lungs and in his right leg. It remains unclear whether the Finn will ever resume professional sport; the Flyers signed Michael del Zotto as a replacement. Despite his health problems, the Chicago Blackhawks signed him in February 2015, with the Flyers receiving a second-round vote for the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and a success-based four- round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft . So Timonen left Philadelphia after eight years and over 500 NHL appearances, giving the reason that he still wanted to win the Stanley Cup . A few days after the commitment, he also announced that he would end his career after the season. For the Blackhawks, Timonen made a total of 34 appearances, actually won the Stanley Cup at the end of the playoffs and ended his career as announced.
In 2020 Timonen was elected to the IIHF Hall of Fame .
