Gregory C. "Greg" Johnson (born March 16, 1971 in Thunder Bay , Ontario ; † July 8, 2019 in Detroit , Michigan ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played 822 games for the Detroit Red Wings , Pittsburgh Penguins , Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators in the National Hockey League on the position of the center has denied. Johnson was the second between 2002 and 2006Team captain in the Nashville Predators franchise history . His brother Ryan Johnson was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Greg Johnson began his career as a hockey player in his hometown with the Thunder Bay Flyers , for which he was active in the junior league United States Hockey League in the 1988/89 season . With his team he won the Clark Cup straight away , while he himself was voted USHL Forward of the Year. He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1989 in the second round as a total of 33rd player by the Philadelphia Flyers , for which he however never played. Instead, he attended the University of North Dakota from 1989 to 1993 , for whose ice hockey team he played parallel in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association .

In early 1993, the Philadelphia Flyers gave it to the Detroit Red Wings . For the team from Michigan, he made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 1993/94 season , while he came in parallel to seven appearances for its farm team Adirondack Red Wings from the American Hockey League . On January 27, 1997, he was given in exchange for the Swede Tomas Sandström to the Pittsburgh Penguins . In October of the same year, the Penguins transferred him to the Chicago Blackhawks for Tuomas Grönman from Finland . Most recently, the former international played for the NHL newcomer Nashville Predators from 1998 to 2006 . On August 14, 2006 Johnson signed a contract with the Detroit Red Wings, for which he was no longer used, as he ended his career as an active athlete at the beginning of the 2006/07 season on October 11, 2006. Previously, the medical examination as part of the season preparation had revealed a heart disease.

Greg Johnson died at his Detroit home at the age of 48. This was announced by his former manager, Tom Laidlaw. No information was given on the cause of death.

International

With the Canadian national team , Johnson took part in the junior division of the 1991 World Junior Championship , where he won the gold medal with his team. In the senior sector, he was in the squad of the national team at the 1993 World Cup and the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer . At the 1994 Winter Games, he and his team won the silver medal.
