Mark Petrovich Midler

Mark Petrovich Midler ( Russian Марк Петрович Мидлер ; born September 24, 1931 in Moscow ; † May 31, 2012 ibid) was a Soviet - Russian fencer and coach . Midler was next to Yuri Sissikin and German Sveshnikov the only Soviet foil fencer who was involved in all eight team gold medals at the Olympic Games and World Championships from 1959 to 1966.

Career

Midler belonged to the Moscow University Sports Club Burewestnik. From 1951 to 1967 he fought internationally for the Soviet Union. When he first took part in the Olympics in 1952 , he entered both with the foil (individual and team) and with the saber (team), but was eliminated early in all three competitions. Four years later, in Melbourne in 1956 , he finished seventh with the foil and he was eliminated in the quarter-finals with the foil team. Midler won his first international medal at the fencing world championships in 1957 with silver in the individual ranking behind the Hungarian Mihály Fülöp , followed by silver for the foil team in 1958 . At the fencing world championships in 1959 , Midler won bronze in the individual competition, while the Soviet team won the team competition. At the 1960 Olympic Games, he came fifth in the individual ranking and won the gold medal with the team. In 1961 Midler once again achieved bronze in the individual ranking and gold with the team at the fencing world championship. This was his last individual medal, followed by gold medals with the team at the World Championships in 1962 , 1963 , 1965 and 1966 , in between he won gold at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo . Midler received his last medal with silver at the 1967 World Fencing Championships .

After his career, Midler coached the Soviet and later the Russian team. The Midler, also highly honored in the Soviet Union, was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.
