Witold Woyda

Witold Woyda (born May 10, 1939 in Posen , † May 5, 2008 in Bronxville , United States ) was a Polish foil fencer and Olympic champion .

Career

Woyda began his international career at the 1960 Olympic Games with a fourth place in the individual ranking, with the team he was eliminated in the quarterfinals. He then won a medal at the season's highlight every year with the Polish team from 1961 to 1973, with one exception in 1970. At the world championships in 1962 he received his only individual medal at world championships when he won the silver medal behind the Soviet fencer German Sveshnikov .

Woyda experienced the high point of his career at the 1972 Olympic Games , when he won gold in both the individual and team rankings. In both final rounds he remained without defeat after losing battles in the previous rounds. For her double victory at the Olympic Games, Woyda was named Poland's Sportsman of the Year in 1972.

Woyda immigrated to the United States in the late 1970s. In 2008 he died there of lung cancer . His remains were transferred to Warsaw and buried in the Powązki Military Cemetery.
