Leonidas Pyrgos
Leonidas "Leon" Pyrgos ( Greek Λεωνίδας Πύργος , * 1874 in Mandinia , Greece , † after 1896) was a Greek fencer . He was the first modern Greek Olympic champion .
Pyrgos won the silver medal (then 1st place) in the foil competition of fencing masters at the 1st Olympic Games in Athens , in which only two athletes competed. His challenger, the French Joanni Perronet, was considered one of the best fencers in the world. After an exciting fight, Pyrgos won 3-1.
It is reported that spectators frenetically celebrated Pyrgos and carried him on their shoulders through the streets of Athens.
