Mauro Numa

Mauro Numa (born November 18, 1961 in Mestre ) is a former Italian fencer who won two Olympic gold medals with the foil .

At the fencing world championship in 1979 Numa won silver with the Italian foil team, which he succeeded again in 1981 . At the World Fencing Championships in Rome in 1982 he won bronze with the team, but was able to win an individual medal for the first time with silver. He also became individual European champion that year . In Los Angeles at the 1984 Olympic Games , he defeated Matthias Behr in the individual competition in the final . Italians and Germans also faced each other in the team final and Mauro Numa won his second gold medal.

At the Fencing World Championships 1985 in Barcelona Numa won again individually and with the team. In the individual he defeated his compatriot Andrea Cipressa in the final , in the team competition the German fencers were again defeated. A year later at the 1986 World Fencing Championships in Sofia, the Italian team again won the final over the Germans, and Numa received the bronze medal in the individual.

At the Olympic Games in 1988 Numa was sixth in the singles. The Italian team lost to the German team in the quarter-finals and ended up only seventh. At the fencing world championships in Denver in 1989 Numa reached third place in the individual competition. In 1990 Numa was not part of the Italian world championship team. At the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992 he returned to the team. He was tenth in the individual standings and 6th with the team.
