Wassyl Wassyljowytsch Stankowytsch ( Ukrainian Василь Васильович Станкович ; born April 25, 1946 in Irschawa , Ukrainian SSR ) is a former Soviet foil fencer .

successes

Wassyl Stankowytsch became the individual world champion in Vienna in 1971 , after having finished second in Havana in 1969 . With the team he won the title in Havana in 1969, in Ankara in 1970 , in Gothenburg in 1973 and in Grenoble in 1974 . He took part in the Olympic Games three times : In 1968 he and the team in Mexico City reached the gold medal, unbeaten, in which France beat the Soviet team 9: 6. In addition to Juri Scharow , German Sweschnikow , Juri Sissikin and Viktor Putjatin , Stankowytsch received the silver medal. He finished the individual competition in ninth place. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , he repeated the success with the team when he again won silver , this time behind Poland , together with Vladimir Denisov , Anatoli Koteschew , Leonid Romanow and Viktor Putyatin . In the individual he was eliminated in the quarter-finals. Four years later in Montreal he missed another medal win in both the individual and the team with fourth place. Stankowytsch was also part of the Degen team, with which he reached fifth place.
