German Alexandrowitsch Sveshnikov

German Alexandrowitsch Sveshnikov ( Russian Герман Александрович Свешников , born May 11, 1937 in Gorky , † June 9, 2003 in Nizhny Novgorod ) was a Soviet fencer who won two Olympic gold medals and nine world championship titles with the foil .

Sveshnikov won his first international medal at the fencing world championships in 1958 , when he won the silver medal with the Soviet team. A year later, the 1959 World Fencing Championships began the winning streak of the Soviet team, which lasted until the 1966 World Fencing Championships and also included Olympic gold medals in Rome in 1960 and Tokyo in 1964 . At the World Championships in 1962 and 1966 Sveshnikov also won the individual ranking, in 1965 he received bronze. At the World Fencing Championships in 1967defeated the Soviet fencers against the Romanians and won silver. The team also received silver at the 1968 Summer Olympics behind the French team. At the fencing world championships in 1969 Sveshnikov was once again part of the winning team.
