Friedrich Wessel

Frederick "Fritz" Wessel (* 29. April 1945 in Bonn ) is a former German foil - fencers and multiple German champion .

Life

At the Olympic Games in 1968 , Wessel retired early in the individual standings, with the team he finished sixth. In 1969 he became the first German individual world champion in foil at the fencing world championship in Cuba .

For this achievement, the Federal President awarded him the Silver Laurel Leaf on October 14, 1969.

A year later he successfully defended the title at the 1970 World Fencing Championships in Ankara. He decided not to start the World Cup the following year in favor of studying law. At the 1972 Olympic Games , Wessel narrowly missed the final of the six best fencers in the singles, and he finished fifth with the team.

Wessel fought for OFC Bonn , for which he was the first German champion with the foil team in 1965 . Seven more titles followed by 1972, and from 1967 his brother Albrecht Wessel was also part of the team. Friedrich Wessel won his only single title in 1968 .

The fencer Ute Wessel is Friedrich Wessel's sister-in-law.
