Ramón Fonst
Ramón Fonst Segundo (born August 31, 1883 in Havana ; † September 10, 1959 there ) was a Cuban fencer . Fonst was the first ever Olympic medalist from Latin America .
He learned fencing from his father Filiberto Fonst . At the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris and the 1904 Games in St. Louis Fonst won a total of 4 gold medals and 1 silver medal. After he had won the three competitions in saber , foil and epee at an international tournament on the occasion of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915 in San Francisco, California , the Cuban Fencing Association granted him a special status, with which he was released from duty from then on was to qualify for the national team in eliminations. At the age of 41, he took part in the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris , where he reached a quarter-finals. He competed in his last competition in 1938 at the age of 55 when he won his sixth gold medal as defending champion at the IV Central America and Caribbean Games in Panama .
After his career as an active athlete, Fonst became President of the National Olympic Committee for Cuba.
