Dipole moment

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The dipole moment is a term from the natural sciences chemistry and physics and can refer to three similar terms of electrostatics / dynamics :

  • The electric dipole moment is a measure of the spatial charge separation, i.e. the strength of the dipole character (e.g. of a molecule).
  • The magnetic dipole moment indicates in a certain way the total "field quantity" generated by a magnetic dipole.
  • In spectroscopy, the transition dipole moment is a measure of the ability of an atom or molecule to absorb or emit electromagnetic radiation.
