Émile Louis François Désiré Coste (born February 2, 1862 in Toulon , † July 7, 1927 there ) was a French fencer and officer .
Life
Émile Coste took part in the Olympic Games in foil fencing in London in 1900 . He fought his way to the semi-finals, which he finished undefeated in first place in his group. He finished the final round as the best with 6-1 victories and thus became Olympic champion .
Coste had already joined the military in 1881 and initially served in various infantry regiments . From 1901 to 1904 he served in the rank of captain as aide-de-camp of the French Minister of War. He then headed a military sports school before retiring from active service as a colonel . He then wrote several books on fencing and physical exercise. Coste was made a knight in 1904 , an officer in 1916 and finally in 1923 a commander of the Legion of Honor .
