Benjamin Kleibrink (born July 30, 1985 in Düsseldorf ) is a German foil fencer and five-time German champion. Kleibrink celebrated his greatest success at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing by winning the gold medal. Kleibrink is the first German individual Olympic champion in the men's floret weapon.

His greatest successes to date were the Junior World Championship title at the Junior World Championship 2005 in Linz / Austria , the Vice European Championship in individual and the European Championship title with the team (together with Peter Joppich , Dominik Behr and Christian Schlechtweg ) at the European Fencing Championship 2007 in Gent / Belgium , as well as the bronze medal in the individual after a defeat against his training partner and later world champion Peter Joppich in the semifinals of the fencing world championships 2007 in Saint Petersburg .

Life

Benjamin Kleibrink was born in Düsseldorf in 1985 and was a student at the Archbishop's St. Ursula High School , where he graduated from high school in 2005. Since 2006 he has been studying sports science at the German Sport University in Cologne after completing his military service as a sports soldier. He already had many successes in school and youth, among other things he was German champion in the A-youth and in the juniors. Since 2003 he has competed for OFC Bonn , previously he fought for FC Moers (1999–2003) and TG Neuss (1994–1999). In November 2008, Kleibrink left OFC Bonn and started in February 2009 for FC Tauberbischofsheim . He continues to train under national and home trainer Uli Schreck at the Bonn base.

The left-hander won several World Cup tournaments, including winning the traditional Grand Prix tournament in Paris in 2006 and 2007 and becoming German champion in 2005 and 2008. At the 2006 World Cup in Turin / Italy , he finished fifth after losing to his training partner and future world champion Peter Joppich. At the 2005 World Cup in Leipzig he and the team (together with Peter Joppich, Dominik Behr and Ralf Bißdorf ) won the bronze medal. He secured the runner-up title with the team at the 2006 World Cup in Turin (with Richard Breutner instead of Ralf Bißdorf), in 2007 in St. Petersburg / Russia (with Christian Schlechtweg instead of Richard Breutner) and in 2008 in Beijing / China (this time again with Richard Breutner instead of Christian Schlechtweg).

In July 2007, Benjamin Kleibrink was elected athlete of the month by Deutsche Sporthilfe in cooperation with Kicker .

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Kleibrink won the gold medal in the foil singles. In the final he defeated the Japanese Yūki Ōta with 15: 9 goals and thus won the first German fencing Olympic title since 1992 and the first in individual since 1988. Benjamin Kleibrink had previously eliminated the Chinese Zhu Jun and Lei Sheng in the semi-finals and quarter-finals . His final opponent Ōta had previously defeated the other German favorite Peter Joppich in the quarter-finals. With the team, he won bronze in the men's floret at the 2012 Olympic Games . After the 2012 Olympic Games, Benjamin Kleibrink retired from competitive sports at the age of 27.

At the end of 2015 he returned to competitive sport and resumed training in Ulrich Schreck's training group. Kleibrink is one of the nominees to represent Germany in men's florets at the 2016 European Fencing Championships in Toruń. At the beginning of June 2016, a few days after being nominated, he was seriously injured in an assault in Shanghai after the end of the foil Grand Prix there. At the German Fencing Championships 2017 Kleibrink was able to win the bronze medal in foil both individually and with the team.
