Georg Holzer

Georg Holzer (born March 9, 1957 in Vienna ) is an Austrian Slavist and Indo-Europeanist .

Life

Holzer works as an associate professor for Slavic Studies at the University of Vienna . He is the author of four monographs and over 50 scientific articles. In 1995 Holzer came up with a new theory about the level of development of the Prot-Slavic language around AD 600. The far-reaching statements on a comparatively narrow empirical basis have found wide acceptance within Slavic studies after initial skepticism. Holzer is the author of the 2002 article, Urslavisch, in the Lexicon of Eastern European Languages . This is part of the on behalf of the Austrian Ministry of Science since 2000 in Klagenfurt published Encyclopedia of Eastern Europe (EEO) .

Holzer publishes the book series Writings on Languages ​​and Texts , in which eight volumes have appeared so far (as of 2007). He is also the author of the first volume in this series ( The opening up of unbelievable languages , Vienna 1996).

In addition, Holzer heads the research project The Language of Medieval Slavery in Austria of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, which has been running since January 1, 2001 ( research assistant : Angela Bergermayer). In the course of this project, a glossary of medieval Slavic words will be created, which can be found in Austrian naming material . After each entry the documentary mentions of the (Germanized) Slavic word, the current place name and its location are given.
