Timur Marselewitsch Safin ( Russian Тимур Марселевич Сафин , Tatar Тимур Марсель улы Сафин, Timur Marcel Uli Safin ; * 4. August 1992 in Tashkent , Uzbekistan ) is a Russian fencer Tatar nationality .

Career

Safin was born in Uzbekistan to a Tatar family who later moved to Ufa in Bashkortostan (Russia). He started fencing in 1998 and was inducted into the youth national team in 2008 and the national team of Russia in 2012. Safin won the bronze medal at the U23 European Championships in 2011, and in 2012 he won the Junior World Championships. In 2013 he won the title at the U23 European Championships. At the European Fencing Championships in 2014 , he won the bronze medal in the team competition with the Russian team. At the Fencing World Championships 2014 in Kazan, the Russian team reached fourth place, in the individual competition Safin won the bronze medal. In 2015 Safin was not part of the Russian team at the European Championships , at the European Games in Baku he won the bronze medal with the Russian team.

In June 2016 Safin won the European Championships in Toruń, both in the individual competition and with the Russian team. In August 2016 he was defeated in the semifinals of the individual competition at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro against the eventual Olympic champion Daniele Garozzo from Italy, while Safin won the battle for bronze against Richard Kruse from Britain . In the team competition, the Russian team won against the French.

In 2017 Safin won the silver medal at the European Championships in Tbilisi, both in the individual competition and with the team, in the individual final he lost to Daniele Garozzo, the team lost to the French. At the World Championships in Leipzig he was eliminated in the individual competition in the round of 16. The Russian team lost the battle for the bronze medal against the French.

Safin lives in Ufa. In 2014 he graduated from the Bashkortostan School of Physical Culture.
