Wladimir Apziauri ( Georgian ვლადიმერ აფციაური ; born February 4, 1962 in Mingrelia and Upper Svanetia , Georgian SSR ; † May 14, 2012 in Tbilisi ) was a Georgian foil fencer who competed for the Soviet Union.
successes
Wladimir Apziauri achieved all of his international successes in team competition. At world championships he won the title with the Soviet team in Rome in 1982 , two bronze medals followed in 1985 in Barcelona and 1990 in Moscow . At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 he was in the team competition together with İlqar Məmmədov , Anwar Ibragimow , Boris Korezki and Alexander Romankow Olympic champion . After victories against China in the quarter-finals and Hungary in the semi-finals, the Soviet team defeated Germany 9: 5 in the battle for gold.
After his active career, he worked as a fencing coach, including from 1998 to 2006 for the Kuwait national team . He was president of the Georgian Fencing Federation.
