İlqar Məmmədov (born November 15, 1965 in Baku , Azerbaijani SSR ) is a former Azerbaijani foil fencer who competed for the Soviet Union and Russia .

successes

İlqar Məmmədov achieved his international success in team competition. At the World Championships he won the title with the team in Denver in 1989 , and won the silver medal six years later in The Hague . Məmmədov participated in four Olympic Games . In 1988 in Seoul he finished tenth in the individual, while he was Olympic champion together with Wladimir Apziauri , Anwar Ibragimow , Boris Korezki and Alexander Romankow . After victories against China in the quarter-finals and Hungary in the semi-finals, the Soviet team defeated Germany 9: 5 in the battle for gold. Four years later in Barcelona he finished the team competition in fifth place. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta he reached the 35th place in the individual, with the team he moved back to the final after victories over Hungary in the quarter-finals and Cuba in the semi-finals. This was won by Russia, whose team also included Wladislaw Pavlovich and Dmitri Shevchenko in addition to Məmmədov , with 45:40 against Poland . In Sydney Məmmədov remained at the 2000 Olympic Games with 21st place in the individual and eighth place in the team competition without a medal.

Məmmədov is married to Jelena Schemajewa , who is multiple fencing world champion. The couple have two daughters.
