Erich Kamper (born June 22, 1914 in Mitterdorf im Mürz Valley ; † November 9, 1995 in Graz ) was an Austrian sports journalist and publicist.

Erich Kamper began building up his archive on Olympic history as a young sports journalist in the 1930s. From 1947 to 1979 he was head of the sports department at the daily newspaper Neue Zeit in Graz. In 1951, Kamper was a founding member of the Association of Track and Field Statisticians . Kamper began early on to systematically research and archive the life data of athletes. This activity resulted in lexicons on Olympic medal winners, first on the Olympic Winter Games, and later also on the Summer Games. His standard works with the biographical dates grew from 12,000 people in later revisions over 14,000 to 16,000 athletes in his last book from 1992. In addition, Kamper published in numerous sports magazines and in 1970 worked on the lexicon Die Stars des Sport von A – Z published by Bodo Harenberg .

Kamper has received several awards for his contributions to Olympic history. In 1969 he became an honorary member of the International Olympic Academy , and in 1987 he received the Olympic Order from the IOC . In 1991 he was named Honorary President at the founding of the International Society of Olympic Historians .

After the death of Erich Kamper, his archive was taken over by the Austrian sports historian Karl Graf.
