Bill Mallon

William "Bill" James Mallon (born February 2, 1952 in Paterson , New Jersey ) is an American sports historian and orthopedist.

Life

Bill Mallon was a professional golfer on the US PGA Tour from 1975 to 1979 , but became interested in the history of the Olympic Games from an early age. In 1981 he published his first work, a statistical summary of the 1904 Olympic Games .

In 1984 he published his first standard work, which he had co-authored with Ian Buchanan : Quest for Gold contains short résumés of all US Olympic medalists. In 1992, together with Erich Kamper , he wrote a who's who of the Olympic Games, in which the date of birth and, if available, the date of death of every Olympic medal winner up to 1992 is listed, provided that Kamper and Mallon could find out this date. In addition, the work contains statistics on sports and participating countries. In 1993, Mallon and Buchanan were co-authors of the Guinness International Who's Who of Sport, edited by Peter Matthews .

Mallon also wrote monographs on the Olympic Games from 1896 to 1920. In 2001 he was awarded the Olympic Order . Bill Mallon is a founding member of the International Society of Olympic Historians and, as the predecessor of Karl Lennartz, was president of this organization. In addition to his contributions to Olympic history, Mallon has written books on golf and medical topics. Mallon is a graduate of Duke University and an orthopedic surgeon specializing in shoulder problems.
